Why does the sea rise and fall?

Real Science

The Moon and the Sun help create tides through gravity. Over time, the water level along a coast rises and falls.

The Moon’s pull is not equally strong across Earth. This difference helps explain why a simple ocean model has two tidal bulges, on opposite sides of Earth.

The Sun also contributes. When the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up, their tidal effects combine to produce a larger tidal range. At right angles, the range is smaller.

Real coastlines and ocean basins make local tides more complicated. The game is a way to explore a simplified pattern, not a prediction of your next beach visit.

In the game model

The Moon, ocean shapes, distances, and time are simplified. Move the Moon, turn Earth, and compare the Sun’s effect in The Moon Pulls the Sea.
